Gordon McDougall has directed over 120 theatre productions which have toured all over the UK and been seen in London’s West End, at the Royal Court, the Round House and the Globe  Playhouse, and in Hong Kong, in six countries in South and Central America, in Europe and the Near East and in Canada and the US.

He has worked with over fifty living playwrights and staged over a dozen new musicals, the first plays of David Storey and Trevor Griffiths, world premieres by D H Lawrence, Lanford Wilson and Simon Gray and newly-commissioned translations from Sir Stephen Spender, Ariane Mnouchkine, Adrian Mitchell, Ted Whitehead and Alfred Jarry.

He has worked with world-famous performers including Len Cariou (King Lear, Master Class), Bob Hoskins (Happy End, As You Like It), Paul Scofield (Wystan), Tom Wilkinson (Brand), Alan Rickman (The Philadelphia Story), Ian McDiarmid (Peer Gynt, Mephisto) and Brian Bedford (The Tempest, The Real Thing). Also with internationally known composers (Jule Styne, Carl Davis, Dominic Muldowney) and designers (Gerald Scarfe, Nadine Baylis, Saul Radomsky). His assistant/associate directors have included Max Stafford-Clark, Michael Ockrent, Michael Attenborough, Richard Wilson, Len Cariou and Nicolas Kent.

He founded and directed the Oxford Music Theatre and was Assistant Director to Anthony Page and John Osborne at the Royal Court. As a freelance he has directed for the Edinburgh and Baalbeck and Three Rivers Festivals, Prospect Theatre Company, City Theatre Pittsburgh, Centaur Theater Montreal and many Shakespeare Festivals and drama schools including the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
