Early in his career McDougall ran informal workshops in local universities - Edinburgh, Manchester, Oxford. He was Granada Artist n Residence at the University of York 1971-2.. Then at Oxford he gave formal lectures and working seminars and supervised undergraduate and graduate students.
Since then he has been Associate Professor of Drama at the University of Waterloo, Ontario (1973-4), Granada Visiting Professor at the University of California at Davis (1982 and 1983), Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta (1984) and at the University of Pittsburgh and

In 1993 he taught undergraduates in the Lingua School of the University of Perugia, and a Shakespeare school for Italian actors. And he devised and ran the first eight-week Shakespeare courses at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1994 and 1995, where he has directed numerous projects and productions.

He was Senior Lecturer at King Alfred’s College, Winchester and in 1995 became Principal of the Guildford School of Acting, a position he held until 2002, when he was invited to become Director of Drama, Professor and Artistic Director of University Theatre at the University of Oklahoma. Recently he has devised work at Bath Spa University. In 2004 he was nominated by students for inclusion in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
