McDougall has served as Vice-Chairman of the Conference of Drama Schools and on the board of directors of the National Council for Drama Training. In 2002 he was awarded the CDS President’s Plate for services to drama training.
He was a member of the Advisory Panel of the North West Arts Association and the first secretary of the Equity Directors’ Committee, over three years bringing theatre directors into professional representation.
He founded the Kennington Association and was its first chairman. In Oklahoma he served on the advisory board of the Oklahoma Arts Institute.
In 1996 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Management and Commerce.
